Goodtoknow pyeti:

She spent 4 days at the vets getting IV fluids and pain medication. She came home today with a pain medication releasing patch and the vet said to feed her her regular diet with no added treats or fatty foods. I cant even get her to eat anything. I have to use a syringe to get her to drink water. Any ideas on how to get her to start eating??

How long has it been since she’s eaten?

Dogs can usually go 3-4 days without food, sometimes up to a week.

Maybe try some PLAIN non-fat yogurt on top of her food to entice her.

What food are you feeding? Did your Vet give you something new to feed?

If you feed your pup dry dog food, try wetting it with water so it is softer to chew. It may help. Hope your pup gets better soon!

Call the Vet back and tell him how she is acting. He might have released her too soon. I have a dog that went through two bouts of pancreatitis and my Vet only recommended Pedialyte for the first day, then a bit of boiled white rice and boiled chicken ****** (boneless, skinless). Also not in large amounts. She didn’t eat her regular food for about a week.
The fact that your dog is so weak indicates to me that she was not ready to come home, or she quickly went on the decline. This is so serious, this illness, but my dog hasn’t had it (since controlled diet incl. treats) for over four years.

It is still early days and she is still very sore and feeling ill. Make sure she is getting plenty of fluids and tempt her little and often with some cooked chicken and rice (its easy on the guts and tempting). A dog with severe pancreatitis has to be kept off food for a few days to give the pancreas a rest (so to speak). If she isn’t eating little bits or taking much in the way of fluids after 24hrs at home she may need to go back into the vets and go on an IV again. Has your dog not got an appointment to go back for a check at this point. When we discharge this sort of patient (I work at a vets) we would have them back daily initially to check up and possibly IV.

i feed my elderly german shepard on rice and chicken most days. beef, toast and gravy a few times a week, and fish and rice once a week. ok, i’m not a vet! but my dog has lived to 15!

i would suggest rice and something with flavour with it, if not meat then some bread and gravy
